They Were There To Get My Money… That Was It” – A One-Sided Poker Game Is Why Merle Haggard & Waylon Jennings Were Never Close Friends | Whiskey Riff

At first glance, Waylon Jennings and Merle Haggard seemed like natural allies — both were pioneers of the Outlaw Country movement, both defied Nashville’s rules, and both sang about the rugged truths of life. But beneath the surface, their relationship was complicated, and while they respected each other as artists, they never truly became — or remained — close friends.

🥃 Personality Clashes and Different Paths

Waylon was a free-spirited rebel, loud and brash, with a larger-than-life attitude and a famously sharp tongue. Merle, by contrast, was more introspective, often battling his own demons in silence. Though they crossed paths frequently and even collaborated musically, their personal chemistry never quite clicked.

Jennings once joked that Haggard was “a great artist, but a hard guy to read,” while Merle described Waylon as someone he “loved from afar.” Despite their similarities in music, they had different values in their day-to-day lives, and their lifestyles — at times fueled by addiction, ego, and pride — often put them on divergent tracks.

🎶 Musical Rivalry, Not Resentment

There was no bitter feud, but there was a sense of rivalry. Jennings was frustrated when Merle wouldn’t join The Highwaymen early on, and Merle occasionally felt overshadowed by the outlaw label that Waylon and Willie made famous. Haggard also didn’t appreciate being lumped into a movement he never truly claimed as his own.

Still, they admired each other’s music. Jennings even recorded “The Eagle” with Merle in 1990 — one of their rare collaborations — and Merle honored Waylon’s legacy after his death in 2002, calling him “a great man and a great friend when it mattered.”

🤝 Respect Endured, Even If Friendship Didn’t

In the end, they respected each other deeply, but the friendship just never flourished. They were two towering figures who walked parallel paths, nodding to each other from across the way — but never fully walking together.
